Abstract

Digital transformation has transformed the way management accounting and cost accounting are done, by embedding sophisticated technologies like AI, big data analytics, cloud computing, RPA, ERP systems and IoT, in the very fabric of organizational decision-making. This research relies on the impacts of the digital technologies on the transformation of the management accounting functions, cost accounting and strategic performance of businesses. The paper describes the data-centric accounting approach that is slowly replacing the traditional one, and which is being used to enable real-time cost tracking, predictive cost analysis, automated cost reporting and cost-informed decision making by the managers. The method of research used in this study is qualitative and secondary data which is data obtained from peer-reviewed journals, books, professional reports and international accounting standards. The research also includes analysis of the newly developed digital tools and how they are used in budgeting and performance measurement, variance analysis, strategic cost management, cyber security risk, implementation cost, employee skills gaps, data governance and organizational resistance to technological change. The results showed that the Digital transformation plays a significant role on the management of the accounting system with reference to the aspects of accuracy, efficiency, transparency and speediness and it can help optimize the use of resources and boost the organization's competitiveness. Moreover, as smart technologies have been embraced, management accountants are no longer just record-keepers but rather strategic partners contributing to the sustainable growth of their businesses. It concludes the paper by stating that continuous professional learning, investment in digital infrastructure, effective governance mechanisms and good change management practices are all critical to a successful digital transformation. The research enriches the literature on digital accounting by summarising the opportunities and challenges of technology enabled management accounting and cost accounting and gives some practical implications for organisations, accounting practitioners, policy makers and researchers who need to make sense of the dynamic and fast changing digital business landscape.
